Aadamodi Galada - A Thyagaraja Krithi

Am going back to the basics. Today I am presenting a Thyagaraja Krithi on Lord Rama.I believe that Carnatic Music is the backborn of any musical form. We are fortunate to have legends like 'Thayagaraja Swami', 'MuthuSwami Deekshithar' and 'Shayamashastri' and so many greats to bless us with so much of great compositions where the learning process is never ending for any music student. Those legends had just music in life and they realized God through their shere devotion.
I want to remember two of my Guru's Late Sri Vaikom Valli Ammal and Sri Late Vaikom Gopalakrishnan who are not with us in this world today. I learned all the basics from Valli Ammal teacher who gave care and love like a mother.Sri Gopalakrishnan sir devoted his entire life for music exploring the vast ocean, sacrificing even a family life. His knowledge in Carnatic Music was so deep that he even wrote Varnams and Keerthanas. Me and my close friend Girish Varma were fortunate to learn even a ragamalika in 72 melakartha ragas composed by Sri. Maha Vaidyanatha Iyer. The Krithi which I am presenting today was taught by Gopalakrishnan Sir. I was very fortunate to have him as my Guru who was gem of a person.
I am experimenting a little bit of raga alapana too in this. Singing Carnatic music is a difficult task and requires a lot of dedication and practice. I am still a student who like to explore this amazing form of music which has unlimited possibilities. I am taking this as an oppurtunity to learn and improve by hearing from all my friends and music lovers.

No words Murali!!! Enna urukkam!!
Charukesi is one of my favourites and your handling of it is amazing!
The aalapanai was fabulous! But thought the swaras could have been more elaborate.
Please blog more carnatic!
One thing-please pay attention to the lyrics in whatever language you're singing. To my knowledge, it is 'maatalaada' (which meand 'to talk') and not 'maada'.Also note that it is a single word, not to be split as 'maada' and 'laada'. Please do confirm with someone who knows Telugu.
This might help:

Murali...Somehow just scribbling some comments will not befit for what you shared with us with such a beautiful piece from Saint Thyagaraja. I enjoyed it thouroughly. I never heard this much emotional rendition of Charukesi at all. Your bhavam is so apt to the mood Swamikal set in the lyrics, pleading the Lord rama to speak ... But you made the rendition in a very slow tempo; traditionally this Kriti is being rendered in faster tempo in all the concert pieces we hear. But when it comes to the composition ; please play within the rules. Your voices range and weight has not being utilized in the rendition. I am sure you had added extra emotions to you and made it a little lighter as Ramh SP or Shankaran Namboodiri do. It will help you as a playback singer and get immediate appeal from listener. But when it comes to tradition, do not dilute it by emoting too much. I know I am just a beginer, but have deep concern on how people present things on concert now a days. Dont be among Yesudas or Balamuralikrishna when it comes to Karnataka Sangeetham. This is my humble request. But if this is the way your Guru taught you, then no issues because I am not person to challenge such a legendary singer and teacher.

Sreejith,
Your comments are welcome. There are different things to be discussed.
1. Tempo - I have tried both in concerts. This time I dint pay attention to it because may be accompaniments were not there. I wil take care of such things even if I am singing with just sruthi.
2.Yes..I do ageree that I made it a little lighter. To an extent its the way in which I used to practice. And may be my Guru Late Sri. Gopi sir was a big fan of Dr.Balamurali Krishna Sir. He beleievd that we need not give Gamakams to all the swaras. There are ragas and swara's in which it has to be used and it should be used judiciously.Listen to any Carnatic musician from Tamilnadu or Andhra. Just listen to how they use swarasthanam against the trend in Kerala. We tend to use give unnecessary Gamakams in swaras(An example is Gandharam in Kalyani.Just see the difference in redition while giving Gamakam to this swaras.Actually Gandharam in Kalyani has to be stright note.)And even I got comments from outside blogging world about somewhat lighter versions. And I belive I have to get out of the lighter versions of renditions and give more ragalakshanas while doing alapana. That I am already working on that.I am stil a student and I am trying to improve my classical singing. Your commments are welcome. And Thanks for openly pointing out those as you always do.
3. I am no one to talk about the Dr.Balamurali Sir or Yesudas. Different styles in Carnatic music is a vast topic and to an extent, thats the beauty of this wonderful musical form.I do enjoy all those different styles.
4.Emotion - I dint put any extra emotion. But somehow its felt in the rendition.Wlll take care of such things. Ragas with small 'nishadam' do have that problem :).
I am very open to suggestions and ready to work on those if it can be really done. Please keep on commenting. Thanks Sreejith.
Regards,
Murali

I read through sreejith's comments. Interesting perspective I must say. I have had some discussions with my learned friend Sheela Raman who comes from the school of Shri. T. M. thyagarajan. Her opinion about Tyagayyar krithis is in stark contrast with Sreejith's. She has always held that Tyagayya Krithis are totally bhaavam based whereas dikshithar's Krithis have all the technical jugglery. Although, I am a no-brainer in carnatic, I think I would agree with Sheela in this respect since Late. shri. MSS seems to have epitomized this concept of bhavam and had won acclaim from all the pundits. I think she had the temerity (or rather divinity) to grace even dikshithar songs like Shree Ranga Pura Vihara with unmatched bhaavam. Anytime I listen to the word "pankajajitha Raama..raghu rama" ( I may have spelt it wrongly), tears brim for reasons unknown.
I think Bhaavam is essential component in the deliveryof songs and that is how the composers intended it to be. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Sreejith has a misconception that by emoting in a carnatic composition, the person is making the song 'light'. I rather think he is making the listeners feel 'heavy' at heart, of course without compromising on the rigid technicalities that are mandatory.
...and Murali your rain of charukesi left me wet in my eyes..It is getting increasingly difficult to shower encomiums on your renditions since the compliments seem to use the same cliched adjectives.god bless u

Hi Friend...I'm Arun...
...I dont know how to respond to this song...its just very beautiful,excellent...Charukesi is one of my favourite Ragam...and you've done full justice to tht Ragam in the Alapanam itself, as far as my knowledge is concernd...but in my view , i cant agree with sreejith's view...ofcourse he may be a gr8 vocalist or so...don know...but in my view...u can add ur own contributions to ur rendering...actually its the freedom tht u wont get while singing a film song or a light music...in Carnatic, u can do whtever u know...whtever u can...to enjoy people and to get the full spirit of tht devinity through tht raga...as its the main purpose of singing carnatic songs...and ur voice, woww wht a punch in tht voice...it just fits for carnatic...haan ur voice is gr8 in Pachainirame also...i think u r versatile...nyway Goodluck... waiting to see you in such a position who can contribute a lot to carnatic music... :)

Murali,
Excellent rendition! I tend to agree with Sindhuja on the words comment though. Actually, it wasn't until my guru in Bengalooru pointed out that the whole meaning of the song changes when the word is split or substituted (for e.g maada--laada modi as against maattalaadamodi)the intensity of changing the meaning hit me.
As to the tempo of the song, this has been sung on a faster tempo as far as I have heard but I am no stickler to rules and welcome new ideas and experimentations.. So kudos for trying it :)
It was a treat listening to you...

Ok..After hearing all of your comments I expirimented live with priyasisters, Sanjay, Sikkil Sisters and Trivandrum Jayasree. Padhantharam for each are different and the same kriti is rendered in various forms by the artists. So I think I shouldn't have asked to follow a particular path to Murali. I take back my comment. Can you sing some Maharaja's compositions ?

man you made me cry with your first alaap there..., its so touching man. I am sure you have put in lot of effort in learning music from such great gurus. I also learned carnatic, but i can never come closer to you in this aspect of Alaap man and emotive singing. Agree with meera, i think its Matalaadi, not mada laadi, i know i have also learned music from Kannada speaking teacher, and I used to face the same problem whether to sing the song the way she teaches or go ahead and interpret with whatever knowledge i have on that particular language.
Thanks again for uploading such a nice number, please keep them coming.
